Il Rifugio Castelberto is a Paradise within arms reach! Opened in 2011, the rifugio (mountain hut) is located at 1765m a.s.l. and it is today managed by Andrea who offers a delicious choice of typical specialities and really exclusive accommodation.
Good food and Calm Dreams
Rifugio Castelberto (mountain hut) is a Paradise within arms reach. It is only from here that you have a 360 degree view of the Adamello, Brunta Mountain range , the Presanella, the Pasubio, the Bondone, the Carega and the Baldo. Opened in 2011, the rifugio,is situated at a height of 1765 metres and today it is managed by Andrea who offers a delicious choice of Alta Lessinia specialities in the dining room and farmhouse kitchen (stube) which seats 50; wooden boards of cold meats and local cheeses, Cimbri gnocchi, Knodels (boiled dumplings), Taglietelle, Grain soups (di cereali), vegetable soups, white and red meat, polenta and meat stews (spezzatino) and a lot of vegetables. And of course not to forget are the desserts; all desserts are homemade. Of these the Buckwheat cake, the Chocolate and Ricotta cake, and Lemon and Fruits tarts are excellent. In the summer there are another 60 seats available in the external area and there is also a kiosk for short stops.
The Secrets of the Mountain
For those of you that love to understand the mountains, find out its secrets or that simply want to get to know them better there is a nearby observation deck, at type of metal pedestal, a few meteres from the rifugio. From here you can discover the names, direction and altitudes of some of the famous peaks which are the rifugio's natural crown and then come to understand their correct magnitude , so to realise that in the mountains you should never be too casual or spontaneous. Also not to be missed are the stone memorial stones of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the trenches where soldiers lived because right where Rifugio Castelberto stands today is where the border used to run.
How to get here
From the 1st of June to the 30th of September cars can drive freely up to the Rifugio Castelberto from 7pm to1 am. In other months and times you need to stop about a kilometre before and the part of the road which is left a very easy walk that is not particularly difficult to manage and even more puts everything into perspective.
The Weather
On the site www.rifugiocastelberto.it , thanks to a website system, it is possible to see the weather in real time to the east of Monte Carega and west of Monte Baldo.
The History
This rifugio was restored by the Scandola family of Erbezzo. “In the 70s my father brought us here so we could get to know these mountain areas," recounts Graziano Scandola, "Many years later, when I found out that the old barracks were for sale, I thought I would honour our history by buying the property and suitably restoring the buildings and then entrusting, to the trustworthy hands of expert and professional collaborators, the management of the Rifugio Castelberto”.
